Freezer martini
I saw a post from @nicolemcmom that piqued my interest a while ago and it resurfaced recently so I decided to give it a try. I love the concept - and the ease - but there are a few things to be aware of since I made some mistakes I made during my initial attempts.
The biggest thing is to follow the measurements. Following strict measurements has never been my cooking strong suit - hence, I like to make big pots of stews and soups because measurements don’t need to be exactly precise. It also explains my reluctance to baking. For this recipe, when I followed Nicole’s measurements, it worked perfectly. But then I got a little over-confident and, well, I have some concerns. Hear me out.
For my initial experiment, I bought a 750 ml bottle of vodka and followed her instructions. Well, with one exception. I don’t like vermouth and I don’t like my martinis super-salty so my freezer version is more like a mix of vodka, olives and water. My first attempt went perfectly and the water froze just enough to pour a super-chilled martini that was perfectly olive-y and salty.
The other aspect that made this special was serving this in the the $1 coupe glasses that I bought at a local thrift store. I love these glasses because they are just the right size to have a little taste without overdoing it, which allows for a moment or two of relaxation in any given hectic day. It also doesn’t leave me with a hefty hangover or too many unnecessary calories.
But, ahem, back to my mistake. The original batch was perfect. But then, after the bottle was drawing down a bit, I decided to add more water and more vodka - in eye-measured amounts. This caused an issue because it threw the ratio off kilter and the water froze in the bottle way too much. Aside from being too watery, I had concerns that it could shatter and no one wants to clean up broken glass, especially around food. So, my big lesson here is to follow the recipe and enjoy it as-is. Don’t mess with perfection!
If you like a cold martini and are pressed for time, I recommend giving this version a try.
Cheers!
